BA Goes Head to Head With easyJet on Cheap Flights to Morocco
This week saw the launch of new cheap flights to Morocco with British Airways – the first time that the flag carrier has directly served the North Africa holidays hot spot since 2008.
BA announced that it will now offer cheap flights to Marrakech thrice-weekly from London's Gatwick Airport. They will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays using Boeing 737 and Airbus A319 aircraft.
BA used to fly to Marrakech under the trading name of GB Airways, before this arm of its business was bought out by budget airline easyJet in March 2008 and the route was stopped. Now it is back and BA has openly declared its intention to directly compete with the likes of easyJet and other cheap flights airlines.
BA head of UK and Ireland sales and marketing Richard Tams said yesterday that the carrier was seeking to appeal to "discerning travellers" who wanted cheap flights to Morocco while giving them a "real alternative".
Mr Tams pointed out that unlike the budget airlines, BA flights could offer cheap fares without any "stealth extras" being added to the bill. "The benefits you get on BA at no extra charge include a generous baggage allowance, drinks and snacks and much more," he declared.
Mr Tams also said that he believed the new Gatwick-Marrakech route would be a "huge success" as the city was a "fabulous destination" for holidaymakers.
"It's a great starting point to explore Morocco, from trekking in the Atlas Mountains to exploring its amazing deserts and beaches and soaking up the atmosphere of the many medinas," he said. Moroccan National Tourist Office chief executive Hamid Addou also hailed the new route, adding that Morocco holidays had become increasingly popular amongst many British holidaymakers.
