Easter Exodus to Sunny Beaches on Spain Holidays
New research has revealed a massive Easter boost in the number of people booking cheap flights to Spain's beach resorts.
More Britons are seeking out sun, sand and sangria than ever before over the Easter and Royal Wedding holidays, with cheap flights comparison site Skyscanner showing a surge of interest in mid-haul or beach destinations. Spain and Canary Islands holidays were the most popular among UK travellers booking during this time, with cheap flights to Malaga, Tenerife and Alicante being the top three destinations.
The largest single increase in popularity was among cheap flights to Tenerife, compared to Easter 2010, although there was also a significant increase in the number of Britons booking cheap flights to New York and Istanbul.
While city breaks remain a popular choice in other months, however, Easter saw a slight fall in the number of people booking cheap flights to Amsterdam, Barcelona and other favourites, although these two destinations remained in the top ten. By contrast, London, Paris and Dublin were nowhere to be seen in the top ten list for 2011.
Commenting on the research, Skyscanner chief executive Gareth Williams said: "The fact that London doesn’t even appear in this year's top 10 certainly seems to suggest that many Brits are trying to escape the hype around the Royal Wedding."
One airline that will be enjoying its last chances to take Brits to Alicante is cheap fares carrier Ryanair, currently embroiled in its latest penny-pinching battle with airport authorities. The carrier has threatened to cut services at Alicante by 80 per cent this October unless the airport withdraws plans to introduce air bridges for departing passengers.
