Enjoy Summer Festivals With Rhodes Holidays
Greece holidays are traditionally a time to sit back and relax in the sunshine, with a glass of ouzo and a plate of olives. But this summer travellers taking cheap flights to Rhodes can also enjoy a number of festivals.
In May and June in Rhodes, the island will play host to the International Medieval Rose Festival, a series of events with a distinctly medieval air. With recreations of a variety of themed fairs from the period covering 1306-1522.
The first major event takes place on 31 May, with the annual floral parade in Rhodes Town. Colourful floats will make their way down the main street of Mandraki, while the town centre will be bedecked with hundreds of flowers and floral displays, transforming it into a riot of colour.
A religious festival will take place on Rhodes on 29 June, with locals turning out to mark the occasion of the martyrdom of St Peter and St Paul, while on 18 July the Apolakkia dam plays host to the Watermelon Festival – featuring music and dance, children's activities, plus the annual competition for the heaviest watermelon.
Old rockers and new music lovers alike will also enjoy the Rhodes Rock festival in Lindos from 8-15 June. During this week, local and international bands will converge on the island to pay tribute to the era of classic rock, performing hits by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd.
Cheap flights to Rhodes are available from airports across the UK, with low-cost carriers such as easyJet and Ryanair, and the destination's popularity is on the rise.
This week the Greek Civil Aviation Service revealed that last month tourist arrivals at Rhodes Airport increased by 132 per cent compared with April 2010.
