First Jet2 Flight Departs from Glasgow
Cheap flights carrier Jet2.com launched its first "landmark" service from Glasgow Airport yesterday, with a flight to Alicante in south-eastern Spain.
The Jet2Scotland-branded aircraft departed Glasgow at 8am, observed by local politicians and dignitaries, including Deputy First Minister for Scotland Nicola Sturgeon. The departure of flight LS177 heralds greater investment by Jet2.com in the Scottish markets, with 150 local jobs being created and 30,000 passengers expected to fly with the budget airline in the first year of operations.
The carrier also said that it had plans to expand further at Glasgow next year and announced a new route offering cheap flights to Geneva in Switzerland this winter – ideal for Scottish winter sports enthusiasts looking to get away over the winter and spring months as the service will operate from 23 December to 15 April 2012.
This brings the total number of destinations offered by Jet2.com from Scotland to eight – passengers can already book cheap flights to Alicante, Dalaman, Faro, Majorca, Nice, Paphos and Tenerife. The airline reported that the most popular destinations were proving to be Alicante, Majorca and Faro, leading Jet2.com to increase capacity on cheap flights to Spain and Portugal for the summer months.
The carrier's managing director commented: "This is an exciting day for us, seeing our first flight take off from Glasgow Airport – our second base in Scotland and eighth in the UK. We're thrilled with the positive response to date and, as a result, we have increased our capacity on our most popular sunshine routes. This really highlights there is a need for an airline which gives customers what they want – great value, choice and flexibility."
