France Holidays Best Bargains this Summer
Travellers looking for the best deals on bargain holidays this summer might be surprised to find that France is once again back on the discount map.
France holidays are making a comeback, and mostly because there has been an exodus from the British tourism trade as holidaymakers sought non-eurozone destinations to get the most for their money. Holidays to Turkey and Egypt in particular last year took huge upswings in popularity according to First Choice and Thomson Holidays.
However, since last year tour operators have been keen to minimise excess capacity and have therefore trimmed the number of available flights and accommodation across most destinations, which means last summer’s highlights are now heavily overbooked. Eurozone destinations on the other hand which were less popular last year have more capacity and are therefore more likely to attract discounts.
Holidays to Spain and Cyprus have benefited from price cuts, and despite the reputation for high prices, holidays to Greece are also much more reasonable this year than in previous summers. Travellers who are willing to take a self catering holiday can expect to receive anything up to a 20 per cent discount on their holiday.
However, the best holiday deals to be found this year will be in France. For a start, from 1 July 2009 the French government has decided to cut VAT on food and drink from 19.6 per cent to 5.5 per cent. The hefty 14 per cent discount should mean a 10 per cent saving on average for most customers. Moreover, French hotels are desperate for customers, and in the buyers’ market, Brits can afford to drive a hard bargain.
