Ibiza Named Top European Diving Destination
Ibiza holidays have long been synonymous with the Balearic Island's world famous club scene, but there is much more to do on the isle – as the local tourism agency reaffirmed this week.
Water sports and aquatic pursuits are available across Ibiza, and the island has recently been declared Europe's leading destination for snorkeling and scuba diving, according to the tourism division of Ibiza Council. This week, the president of the council Xico Tarres met officials from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) to receive the Best Diving Destination award.
The association noted that there are now some 12 PADI-registered diving centres across the island, giving people on their Ibiza holidays ample opportunities to experience and enjoy its incredible diversity of animal and plant life. Judges said that the Punta Dive and Vellmari Europe centres were especially good – with Vellmari offering an excellent range of online courses and other online innovations.
Anyone considering taking cheap flights to Ibiza for a spot of diving should try and visit the Posidonia seabed, a Unesco World Heritage site since 1999. Alternatively, the picturesque diving sites in Sa Pedrera, Ses Margalides and the Es Vedranell and Isles Bledes islets are also excellent spots.
The latest divers' paradise is the wreck of the merchant cargo vessel Don Pedro, which sank in 2007, but which has recently been made accessible for scuba diving.
Cheap flights to Ibiza can be found at airports across the UK, with a range of low-cost operators such as easyJet. There are also a wide range of independent operators online with cheap hotels and other forms of accommodation, such as villas in Ibiza that are perfect for Britons seeking a sunshine holiday on a budget.
