Lisbon Hailed as Great Value City
The Post Office has revealed that holidays in the Portuguese capital Lisbon are excellent value for anyone looking to make their money go further.
Its latest City Costs Barometer found that prices in Lisbon are less than half those in the popular tourist destinations of Paris or Rome.
In Paris, a tourist would pay around £2.39 for a cup of coffee, while in Lisbon it is a mere 67p on average. At the same time, a three course meal with wine in a Parisian restaurant would cost an average of £67.05 – the bill in Lisbon would come to just £28.74.
There is much to recommend the city’s cuisine, as well. Lisbon is rightly celebrated for its fish dishes, especially its roasted sardines with basil and salted cod.
Visitors looking for a unique cultural experience on their city break can enjoy an enchanting night out in the Alfama district, home of Lisbon’s soulful fado music, or they can take a trip to the Bohemian District.
For fans of Europe’s many street festivals, Lisbon celebrates the Festival of Santo Antonio – the city’s patron saint – on 12-13 June, with parades and performances along Avenida da Liberdade.
After the Post Office’s value for money endorsement, more people may consider Lisbon this year, instead of the more traditional holidays in Barcelona, Malaga or other southern European destinations. There are already many cheap flights to Lisbon available online, and a few moments searching will turn up a host of bargains.
Portugal product manager at Sunvil Discovery travel operators, told foreign exchange specialists Axia that, “the average salary in Lisbon is around 450 euros a month and the cost of living is proportionately lower than in UK – consequently the cost of a city break can be very reasonable.”
