Luton Airport Riding Wave of Passenger Growth
London Luton Airport celebrated last week after revealing that it enjoyed another increase in the number of passengers taking cheap flights from the hub last month.
The rise in passenger volume represents growth for London Luton for the second month in a row this year. In February, there was an across-the-board increase in domestic, EU and non-EU passenger traffic, while January saw an impressive 9.433 per cent increase.
The status of the hub as the headquarters of pioneering cheap fares carrier easyJet, plus other airlines' numerous cheap flights to Europe and beyond, have made London Luton Airport an increasingly popular choice among budget-conscious travellers in the South East. Last year the hub recorded a strong performance, with nearly 9 million business travellers and holidaymakers departing from or arriving at the airport.
The airport's managing director Glyn Jones said yesterday that even more cheap flights and additional capacity on existing services are all planned in the short and medium term in response to public demand.
"We believe that continued growth in passenger numbers demonstrates our route network and excellent transport links remain attractive to leisure and business travellers alike," he declared. "New routes on sale and extra capacity from our airlines ensure we are meeting extra demand."
Carriers operating from London Luton, such as easyJet, Aer Arann and Monarch Airlines, operate between them some 90 different routes to destinations across Europe, Asia and Africa. A recent announcement by Monarch said that this summer season it will be offering additional capacity on its cheap flights to Portugal, Spain, Cyprus and Turkey.
