Monarch Named Worlds Greenest Airline
Cheap fares carrier Monarch Airlines celebrated after it scooped the "world's greenest airline" award at the ITB Berlin travel show.
The UK budget airline won plaudits for its environmental policies, in the wake of a study made by carbon offsetting firm Atmosfair. This non-profit organisation for combating climate change was founded 6 years ago as part of a research project by the German federal Ministry for the environment.
The study found that Monarch came first in the top 10 list of airlines using fuel-efficient aircraft. Its fuel efficiency was also increased because of the consistently high load factor of its cheap flights to Europe and beyond.
Monarch managed to beat off strong competition from other airlines to win the award, including Air Europa, Air Transat, Air New Zealand Link, Kingfisher Airlines and Sri Lankan Airlines.
Monarch currently offers passengers cheap flights to over 50 destinations from its bases at airports across the UK, including London Luton and Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester. From here, customers can take cheap flights to France, Spain, the Canary Islands, Egypt and even as far afield as Florida.
The network has been expanding recently, with Monarch announcing only last week that this summer will see the start of cheap flights to the island of Corfu in Greece and the family resort of Bodrum in Turkey. The airline will also increase the frequency of its cheap flights to Tenerife, Paphos, Majorca and other popular sunshine destinations.
The carrier welcomed the award and pointed out that more and more people are opting for its mixture of scheduled and charter flights – with nearly 6 million travelling with Monarch last year.
