More Cheap Flights to Greece from Heathrow in 2011
Good news for London air travellers seeking routes to their Greece holidays this summer – Aegean Airlines announced today that it will be offering more cheap flights to Greece from London's Heathrow Airport.
From Sunday, the carrier will begin an enhanced service from the busy hub, with a doubling of its cheap flights to Athens from two to four a day. Aegean also plans to begin offering Heathrow passengers cheap flights to Cyprus, with a daily service to Larnaca. Both routes will use Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft with 168 and 195 seats respectively, offering passengers economy or business seating.
As well as its new services from Heathrow, Aegean Airlines – a member of the Star Alliance of carriers – is also planning to expand its network across Belgium, Cyprus, France, Italy, Russia and Spain.
The new routes and enhanced services follow the decision some two weeks ago by fellow Greek carrier Olympic Air to cancel all of its cheap flights from the UK this coming Sunday. Both airlines have been seeking permission for a merger, although this has been rejected by the EU's Competition Commission. The airlines are currently appealing the ruling and hope for permission to merge in the future.
Olympic Air will divert its former UK resources to offer more services across south-east Europe. It will be cutting some services from airports in Brussels, Paris and Vienna but keeping or expanding its operations from airports in Amsterdam, Belgrade, Bucharest, Cairo, Istanbul, Larnaca, Sofia and Tirana.
Until Sunday, it will be operating cheap flights to Athens from Heathrow and cheap flights to Thessaloniki from Gatwick Airport.
