Ryanair Diverts Cheap Flights to Sicily

Ryanair Diverts Cheap Flights to Sicily Budget fares carrier Ryanair has revealed that it has had to change the routes used by its cheap flights to Sicily due to the air strikes currently taking place in Libya's airspace.

Ryanair operates cheap flights to Sicily's Trapani Airport, on the Italian island's south-western tip where there is also a military base. The current military action has led to the airport being closed to all civilian flights as air forces strive to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya.

Ryanair said it had to make plans last week for at least 28 scheduled cheap flights to divert and land at the nearby Palermo Airport, which is just 35 miles from Trapani.

Sicily holidays have become increasingly popular among UK holidaymakers, thanks to the island's laid-back atmosphere, its delicious Italian cuisine and the growing choice of cheap flights to Sicily.

Last week, Ryanair's arch-rival easyJet announced that it is to begin offering cheap flights to Sicily's Catania Airport from London's Gatwick three times a week from 25 June. The carrier said that the aim of the new route was to make the "glorious" island more "accessible and affordable for everyone".

Sicily holidays also offer the chance to tour fascinating Greek and Roman ruins and experience the buzz of life in the capital Palermo.

As well as all this, Sicily is home to some of the world's most famous active volcanoes, most notably Mount Etna, plus the seven UNESCO-designated volcanic islets known as the Aeolian Islands. Walking tours of the volcanoes and surrounding areas are available to holidaymakers, with a qualified volcanologist on hand to give information and answer any questions that eager tourists might have on these remarkable sites.
