Ryanair Launch New Summer Holiday Flights
Cheap flight provider Ryanair opened up new routes from Cork this week to offer stiff competition to Irish rivals Aer Lingus.
The airline continued its tradition of blunt and direct press releases armed with the title: “Don’t be screwed by Aer Lingus’s high fares.” CEO Michael O’Leary elaborated: “Ryanair’s seven summer peak routes will mean that for the first time the people of Cork can escape to the sun by availing of Ryanair’s guaranteed lowest fares, avoiding Aer Lingus’ high fares.”
During the busy summer holiday months of June, July and August, Ryanair will offer passengers cheap flights to Spain with new routes available to Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and Lanzarote. Local prices in Spain have come down by up to 30 per cent this year according to the Post Office, making Spanish resorts popular choices once again.
New routes will also be introduced between Cork and France, with Bordeaux and La Rochelle on offer from June 2010. The airline will also be increasing its capacity for Portugal flights with a new flight path to Faro.
In a pointed attack against Aer Lingus, Ryanair boasted that its cheap flights were at least a third cheaper than Aer Lingus, and in some cases flights were 48 per cent cheaper than the rival carrier. In another snipe, Ryanair said that it refused to fly aircraft from Cork outside of the peak season because of the government’s decision to implement its €10 tourist tax, along with rising airport charges from the Dublin Airport Authority.
In a further announcement, Ryanair revealed that it would be increasing capacity to Eastern Europe from Bristol by launching new flights to Poland and Lithuania starting this May.
