Ryanair Launches Cheap Flights to Corfu
Cheap fares airline Ryanair made a typically aggressive announcement this week to publicise its first cheap flights to Corfu, with an attack on the "high fare airlines and greedy tour operators" which it said was "strangling" tourism on the island.
Ryanair will begin operating cheap flights to Corfu from London Stansted Airport starting in June, making the destination the airline's fourth route to Greece from the UK. Currently it offers cheap flights to Rhodes and Thessaloniki from Stansted and cheap flights to Kos from Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
Announcing the new "summer sun" route, Ryanair's communications head Stephen McNamara said that the cheap flights airline believed the route would deliver 30,000 passengers every year and create some 30 local jobs in Corfu itself. However, he also took the opportunity to claim that "Greek tourism has been strangled by high fare airlines and greedy tour operators, who have been making out like bandits in the absence of a low fares airline to deliver the competition that Greek tourism needs."
London Stansted Airport said recently that Greece and Turkey holidays are proving very popular from the hub this year, as they offer holidaymakers the perfect opportunity to catch the sun and leave their troubles behind.
"Links to Greece have always been extremely popular and Turkey continues to grow as one of the leading destinations for guaranteed sun on short-haul travel," said the airport's MD Nick Barton. "easyJet ventured into the Turkish markets last year, launching successful services from Stansted to Bodrum and Dalaman. I'd like to wish all our airlines a very successful Summer season."
