Spain Matches Turkey for Cheap Holidays
Holidays to Spain have fallen significantly in price over the last 12 months putting them on par with last year’s top cheap holiday destination Turkey.
According to the latest Post Office Holiday Money Report, Spanish destinations have dropped prices by 30 per cent on staple items like a cup of coffee, suncream and evening meal for two.
Spain was ranked as the fourth cheapest country overall to take a holiday in 2010, making it the best value eurozone destination ahead of Greece, Portugal and Malta. Hungary and Bulgaria were ranked first and third in the Post Office barometer proving popular cheap holiday destinations in Eastern Europe.
Meanwhile, Turkey has become more expensive than last year. Prices jumped by 44 per cent from 2009 figures. Head of Travel Money at the Post Office, Sarah Munro said: “Judging by the price rises in our latest cost comparison survey, Turkey is unlikely to be the cheap destination that it was a couple of years ago when the Post Office barometer identified the country as a best buy.”
In the long-haul market, Thailand was once again ranked as the top value destination, ranked second overall on the holiday cost barometer. The main focus remains closer to home however, with customers finding a greater availability of cheap flights to eurozone destinations, suddenly the European hot spots are once again an attractive option for holidays.
Despite the results, holidays to Egypt, Turkey and Tunisia are expected to sell strongly this year, with trends continuing from the surge of last year.
