Spain Remains Popular for Easter Holidays
Holidays to Spain this Easter continue their strength and dominance in online searches according to new figures published by Skyscanner.
Spain is still the most searched for country when it comes to Brits seeking cheap holidays overseas, with Malaga coming in as the most searched for destination abroad.
However, fewer people are making searches for Spainish holidays than they were this time last year, the site found. The strong performance of the Costa del Sol – followed by Barcelona – was tempered by the fall of Alicante.
The Costa Blanca sun spot fell three places compared to the previous year and Palma lost its position in the top ten completely. The perennial party favourite Amsterdam remains a very popular destination, with searches for the city increasing to boost it two places in the league table.
The largest single rise up the charts went to New York, however. More people than ever are searching for cheap flights to New York, causing the Big Apple to take fifth place in the top ten. Last Easter, New York was not in the top ten at all.
At number eight was the Irish capital Dublin, partly thanks to a surge in popularity for St. Patrick’s Day, while Paris dropped two places to number nine. There was another new entry at number ten for Geneva, due to the fantastic opportunities for cheap ski holidays this season. Other destinations to make the top twenty included Berlin, Istanbul and Marrakech.
Skyscanner Co-founder Barry Smith said: “Spain’s long domination over the British tourist market may be on the wane. Whilst it’s still the most popular country for an Easter break, it seems to be falling from favour.”
