Twitter and Vodafone Map Holiday Destinations
Twitter has joined with telecoms company Vodafone to tap into the ‘tweets’ to track where Brits are saying they are travelling to this summer, according to a news report from TravelMole.
Twitter is one of the increasingly popular phenomena of 2009. Essentially another social networking tool, it enables registered users to say what they are doing in up to 140 characters. It’s short and snappy and seemingly satisfies the modern need to tell all friends and family (or, in the case of Twitter, your ‘followers’) what you are doing in as few words as possible.
The social networking and phone companies have launched holiday maps showing where British ‘tweeters’ (those who actively use Twitter) are heading for this year. The service was launched in June and so far New York, Vancouver and Paris are heading the list of favourite destinations, with 16 per cent of Brits staying at home as the recession continues to take its toll on family spending.
It appears that holidaymakers from Birmingham are most likely to stay at home this summer, with 20 per cent of those staying on these shores heading for resorts such as Brighton or popular destinations like Cornwall. Up to late July the top ten list of Twitter destinations was as follows:
The map showed that plenty of Londoners are getting away from the capital this summer but 60 per cent are demonstrating their love of city life as their top holiday destinations are cities like Paris, Hong Kong and Barcelona.
