easyJet Launches Extra Italy and Spain Routes
Budget airline easyJet has revealed that it will begin offering additional cheap flights to Spain and Italy this summer from two major UK airports.
From 17 June, the carrier will start operating cheap flights to Bilbao from Manchester Airport. This will be the first direct service from the north-western hub to the northern Spanish city and will be flying three times a week.
The other new route launches on 25 June from London's Gatwick Airport, when easyJet will begin offering cheap flights to Sicily's Catania Airport, again flying three times a week.
easyJet UK commercial manager Ali Gayward said of the Bilbao route: "This new route will build upon easyJet's presence at Manchester Airport and further strengthen the region's economic links with the Basque Country." Mr Gayward's airline now offers cheap flights to 24 destinations from Manchester, having only just begun operating its 23rd – cheap flights to Palma in Majorca.
Bilbao has become an increasingly popular destination for UK travellers looking for some cultural treasures on their Spain holidays. The city is the capital of the Basque Country region and home to the stunning Guggenheim Museum. It is also well located to connect to other popular destinations such as San Sebastián and Pamplona – where every year brave or foolhardy souls take part in the Running of the Bulls festival.
Turning to the new Italy route, easyJet UK general manager Paul Simmons added: "Sicily is a glorious island and a popular tourist destination. By launching the new route to Catania we're making it more accessible and affordable for everyone." The Daily Telegraph website recently listed Italy as one of the top countries for holidays in 2011.
